New Year Luck

I don't know, but I've been told that each black-eyed pea eaten on New Years Day offers some indiscriminant amount of good luck forwarded towards your next year.

So, If you don't eat black eyed peas on Sunday, we will know who to blame for the next hurricane!

I will have a big fat pot of beans at my house on Jan 1st. All are welcome. You bring the beer.

The game starts at 10pm, after everybody feels fuzzy and assertive...

Also, bring a snack and or booze.

The theme for this year: Velvet

The skinny on the neighborhood meetings

Ok, this is the press release version:

“A community at work rebuilding its own community” is the mission statement of Central City Comeback Committee. Each week members of the community gather and discuss news, events, meetings, and concerns. The attendance at these meetings varies somewhat, but they consistently are attended by representatives from Urban Impact, Sixth District police officers, and lead by Pat Evens of the UNO Urban Roots project.

Members of this committee bring information to the table concerning the results of each week’s bevy of meetings that were attended throughout the city by committee members. Regular topics of discussion include: charter schools, housing, trailer and plot allocation, job resources, information distribution, safety, and community / police relationship enhancement.

The jist of this group, is that it is very slow moving towards small actions….but it has been a good place for people to ask questions and share info. After the holidays, this group will be making a concerted effort to go-public, so I will fill you all in.

Anyone up for a real-life meeting?

My first order of business is to resuscitate this blog. Hi, I hope everyone is doing well, and your Thanksgivings were fabulous.

My second is to try and put together an actual meeting. I would like to validate our neighborhood association. Billy told me how that is done, but I umm...mostly forgot.

These are my major concerns right now:
§ The mission is re-opening
§ There are gigantic holes in the middle of Clio between Baronne and St. Charles
§ The Carondolet St. / Erato stop signs have gone back to where they came from
§ Who knows what’s up with trash?

I propose to have a meeting next Monday 12/11/05. Any takers? Any other suggestions?
Please feel free to write, post, stop by, or call.

Hello and welcome home to everyone. I still do not have internet access but, I managed to steal some on-line time on the Northshore.

I went to a neighborhood meeting last Wed. and it was pretty good. There will be another one this Wed. at the police station (MLK and OCH)at 10:00 AM. If anyone has time to go, it would be great to represent ccmuses.

take care.

Costume Party 10/31

Hey Y'all,

Billy and I are having a costume party for Halloween at 1234 Carondelet. Personally, I love dressing up, but you don't have to. Have not nailed the start time down yet. Hell, I don't even know what kind of costume I can rustle up. Maybe I'll just be silver girl and wear tinfoil. Hey everybody, feel free to wear tinfoil costumes.

You'll Thank Me Later

Something to add to your supply list prior to returning: mosquito netting! With all the puddles of stagnant water around, there's probably about, oh, say 100 billion of the wee beasties flying around Orleans Parish. With a greatly diminished pool of victims to prey upon.

You have been warned :)

Power and Light

Rob here (here being Nashville for the time being.) I spoke to Aurora, who is back home and reports that power, phone and water is in service at her house (and presumably for the whole block.) Standard warnings about water quality apply. I've also heard that the Lee Circle Exxon is open.

Good luck to anyone in the first wave of returnees - be safe out there!

Brown's Hell-vet

Rob here - just heard (second-hand) from a salvage guy that almost all of the Brown's Velvet truck fleet was jacked and abandoned all over town. Many were flooded. I'm assuming this is the delivery trucks, not the big rigs.

Not many silver linings today (the 9th ward is flooding again), but maybe Suiza will shut down that ammonia-spewing hellhole once and for all.

Escape Into New Orleans

It looks like the new evacuation is going to prevent me from traveling into the city this week and I am going up to NYC the following week so I think that I am just going to FEDEX keys to Radcliffe to start work on my roof while I am away, if he can get in.

Thought people might also be interested in reading a piece I wrote about escaping into New Orleans a week ago Sunday. It has a great picture of my house and the story of the two dogs we found on Carondelet. It is at http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/09/19/homeagain/index_np.html . You have to watch a little ad to see the whole thing but it is pretty painless.

Returning to the neighborhood next week

When are folks planning to return?

Given the fact that we are allowed to return and that I have damage to my house that will only worsen the longer I am away, I am going to return early next week. I am going to get up on my roof with my insurance adjuster and try to get the Army Corp to put a temporary roof on my house. Is anyone else planning on coming back for any extended period next week. Radcliffe will be back on Weds. and is going to start work on various houses. It would be good if there were others on the block. Anyone?

The sooner we get back, the sooner things will change for the better. The sooner you get back and clean out your fridge, the less funky it will be.

This is basically how we found it. Posted by Picasa
Hello everyone,
Sean and I went into the city yesterday. It was creepy, but not irreparable. Most of us did very well considering. I posted the pictures we had time to take, we were sort of rushing…it’s pretty stinky. Our experience was very similar to Billy’s. We got there early, we were expeditious, and then we left.

I hope you can find what you are looking for here. Good luck.
